Save Our Kids and Protect Marriage Initiatives
The California Republican Party overwhelmingly endorsed the Save Our Kids initiative to overturn SB 777 at their spring convention last weekend.
Republican delegates from all across California gathered for their biannual meeting and showed their strong opposition to Governor Schwarzenegger's signing of the homosexual indoctrination law.
"We are thrilled that the Republican Party is lending its influential support to our important campaign," declared Karen England, executive director for Capitol Resource Family Impact, the proponent of the Save Our Kids initiative. "Special thanks are owed to Assemblyman Bob Huff for presenting the initiative to the delegates and successfully arguing for an endorsement. As soon as we receive title and summary from the attorney general, we will capitalize on this momentum and begin gathering signatures.
The CRP also endorsed the Protect Marriage initiative, which has petitions circulating the state right now.
"The defense of marriage is vital to the stability of our state and nation," stated England. "With these endorsements, the CRP has boldly taken a stand for traditional marriage and the family. We are grateful for their support."
In other good news from the CRP's gathering, delegates approved a platform that maintained its pro-family and pro-life principles. There had been an effort by homosexual activists and "moderates" to strip the party's platform of these important beliefs. "This was an important victory for pro-family voters and candidates," explained England. "The platform contains the beliefs and principles that hold elected officials accountable. Removing the marriage and pro-life principles would alienate millions of voters that care very deeply about these essential issues."

What will the new initiative do?
The initiative will do the same thing as the referendum-it will overturn the offensive portions of SB 777. However, with the initiative we can pinpoint the specific section of the law that promotes controversial lifestyles in the classroom.
Can I continue gathering signatures with the petitions I have?
No. The initiative will need a new petition. We are in the process of designing the new petitions and hope to post them on our web site when we receive the new title and summary from the attorney general's office. These new petitions will be shorter and hopefully we can design them to be posted on the internet.
Do I need to sign another petition?
Yes. Now that the referendum is over, we will have a new petition for the initiative. This means we will need everyone who signed a referendum petition to now sign an initiative petition. The petitions will look different so you will be able to tell whether you signed one or not.
How is an initiative different than the SB 777 referendum?
A referendum is "the practice of referring measures proposed or passed by a legislative body to the vote of the electorate for approval or rejection." In other words, if the legislature and governor approve a law such as SB 777, the people may step in and, via the ballot process, reverse the decision.
In California, the people have only 90 days from the day the governor signs a law to file a referendum and gather the signatures necessary to overturn it. In the case of the SB 777 referendum, the threshold was 434,000 valid voter signatures. The campaign was just a few thousand signatures shy of reaching this goal.
It is virtually unheard of to gather the amount of signatures the SB 777 referendum obtained in such a short amount of time, especially during the busy holiday season and without paid signature gatherers. Due to this impressive response, the Save Our Kids campaign filed an initiative to continue the effort to overturn SB 777's harmful policies.
Why are the new petitions shorter than the referendum petitions?
When referring a law to the people, the entire text of the law must be included so that petition signers can read and understand what they are signing. SB 777 was a very long bill and the entire text of the bill would only fit on the four-page petition. The author of SB 777 craftily hid the offensive portion of SB 777.
How much time will we have to gather signatures for the new initiative?
The great news is that we will have double the time of the referendum to gather signatures! Instead of the 70-day limit imposed on the referendum, we will have 150 days to gather the same amount of signatures.
How many signatures do we need to gather?
We will need to gather the same amount as the referendum needed, 434,000. The campaign will aim for 500,000 signatures to make sure we have enough valid voter signatures (only registered voters may sign petitions).
What can I do until we have new petitions to circulate?
Educate your friends, family and associates about the dangerous policies of SB 777. The more we spread the word about this shocking law, the greater the response from outraged citizens. SB 777 will demand equal time for highly controversial lifestyles such as homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality in the classroom. Students as young as 5 will be subject to this kind of indoctrination.
